29. Marriage and the Horsemen

Today I am introducing you to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. This concept was introduced by Dr. John Gottman who has written books about how these certain communication styles, that he has named The Four Horsemen, if allowed to run rampant in a relationship, are lethal. They usually enter a relationship in a certain order, and if allowed to stay there, that marriage or relationship will most likely fail. I wanted you to develop an awareness of these signs so you can get help to fight them off if you see them.

28. The Power of Genuine Praise

Today we are talking about how important your words of praise and encouragement are to your child.

Praise is so good for your child’s confidence and sense of self. It also makes them want to repeat the behaviors you praised them for, usually. Praise really works. It’s what kids need. Watch your discouraged child start to change before your eyes.

Although there are better ways than others to praise your child, which we talk about, I truly believe any praise is better than no praise at all. There are a lot of experts out there telling us way too many rules about the right way and the wrong way to praise a child, but if it comes from your heart, you really can’t go wrong.

If you aren’t sure where to begin praising and encouraging your child in the best way possible, you can visit my website, the-mommywhisperer.com, to find some great Words of Genuine Praise to get you started.

17. Why Children Misbehave

This is part two of last week’s episode. We talk about the fact that all behavior actually occurs for a social purpose. We, as humans, are decision making social beings whose main goal in life is to belong. Each of us ultimately wants to find and maintain a place of significance in our lives. We try to find beliefs and feelings and behaviors that we think might help us gain some significance, or some belonging.

Also in this episode, we talk about the four main reasons for misbehavior. Misbehaving children are discouraged for reasons that we have to figure out as their mom. They do not believe they can belong in useful ways, so they try to belong through their misbehaviors.

This is powerful information, because once we discover the goal of our child’s misbehavior, we are then in a position to begin redirecting our child for the better.

10. A United Front

Kids are smart. From a very young age, they know what each parent will let them get away with and they even know how to pit parents against each other, if needed, to get their way. It seems as though they sometimes love to divide and conquer, and they have almost a sixth sense to know exactly where parents might disagree.

And the thing is, none of this is the child’s fault. Every child does this to some extent. Every child looks for the cracks in the foundation at some time in their childhood. Even the best, most obedient kids will test to see if the front is indeed united. It is up to parents to make sure that your children cannot succeed at dividing you. Listen to this episode for more information on how to build a united front.
